In common with many people, I’ve always had a passing interest in natural health products, but never really taken the time to research how effective they can be and what each one is meant to do. I know a few people who absolutely swear by them, and many more people who want absolutely nothing do with them. However, having taken some time recently, I’ve been rather taken aback by the sheer variety of products and their uses.
Grapefruit Seed Extract
One of the many interesting things I’ve discovered is Grapefruit Seed Extract, commonly abbreviated to GSE. It’s a liquid made from the seeds, pulp and white membranes of grapefruit. It is said to have strong anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties which mean it is useful for a variety of uses.
The development of GSE is attributed to Yugoslavian nuclear physicist Dr. Jacob Harich who branched into researching grapefruits and their uses when he moved to Florida in 1963. By 1990, holistic health practitioners had started to recommend the use of GSE to their parents.
Citricidal
GSE is commonly found in citricidal products. Citricidal comes in both liquid and tablet form, with citricidal liquid having a particularly wide variety of uses. Citricidal liquid usually contains roughly 40-60% GSE with the remainder consisting of a variety of other beneficial herbs in keeping with Chinese medicine: why have one beneficial ingredient, when you can have more?
Of course, part of the reason GSE is coupled with other ingredients is because it is highly acidic and must never be ingested at full strength. In fact, even when paired with so many other ingredients in citricidal liquid, it is still important to dilute it into a solution. It is also essential not to take it if you have citrus allergies or are otherwise sensitive to acidity. Any GSE product, including citricidal should be kept away from the eyes.
Uses
Due to such a broad range of properties, citricidal is useful for a similarly broad range of applications. Principally, citricidal is promoted as being good for digestive and intestinal health for which it can be taken orally. It is also said to be a good remedy for colds, flus, allergies and parasitic diseases. Its anti-bacterial properties mean that it can also be used as a general disinfectant, and this makes it useful for minor skin irritations, itchy scalps, acne, as a throat gargle and mouthwash and other external uses.
Most surprisingly, and most interestingly of all for a natural health product is that it can also be used to make a solution to sanitise your toothbrush between uses and for disinfecting your chopping board. It’s not often that you find medicine that can also disinfect your chopping board, but that’s what citricidal is.
Thanks to this tremendous diversity of applications, citricidal is often recommended as a travel companion. After all, it comes in a very small bottle that can save an awful lot of packing space that would normally be taken up by a myriad of other health products taken for those ‘just incase’ moments.
Most people, when they think of natural health products, tend to think of the more obvious vitamin and mineral supplements. However, buying citricidal is just one example of the breadth and depth of products out there that can help you.
